It is my sincere hope that this letter finds you well.
I am writing to let you know that it is official, the American Prodigal Tour 3.0 has begun, the arrow has officially left the string. We kicked off last night just outside of Detroit, Michigan, and oh my goodness! It was SOOO cold! Man. I don’t have clothes for that type thing. Like, I woke up that morning on the bus and sat around and read for a little while, ate a hostess cupcake and had a glass of milk, because, well, both of those things were nearby, and then I thought to myself, “Self. We should open a window shade.” And so it took a while to figure out how exactly to do that because the window shades are operated with a button electronically, and like, who would ever think like, “I should start pushing buttons and see if the shades go up,” because that would be like, not the first thing you would think of. But, when I finally just started pushing buttons and the shades went up I was like “aw man. we must be parked next to a building or our semi-truck, eighteen wheeler trailer or something because there was like no view at all, just all white and whatnot It was a full two hours before I actually noticed that our view was not obstructed but instead there was like a blizzard or something going down out there. That “white” was what people in Michigan call, “outside.” And I was not dressed for such a thing. Also, I was thinking thoughts like, “well, I guess we will have to cancel or something because, like, you can’t, like, go outside and stuff and for sure you can’t, like, drive somewhere because of the blizzard and whatnot.
But that was not the case! Turns out people live in places like that where this happens all of the time. Like it was, for real, sixty-two degrees the day before this blizzard came through. I was told it was not a blizzard but just sort of snowing. Regardless, I still didn’t have the proper clothing. I was also told that the show was, “oversold,” and that people would come. Now, I wasn’t sure what they meant by, “oversold,” exactly because I have had dealings with folk that do just that sort of thing. Like Delta Airlines, and the hotel we had reserved rooms with, and Hertz, and I was like, “well, looking at that blizzard I’d suspect not everybody’s gonna make it out, and given my experience with such things I say we just keep selling tickets. Trust me. I know how this works, I’ve been on the other side of this type thing and best I can figure is that everyone does show up we just ask for volunteers to go back home and offer them some vouchers, like, to Waffle House or Taco Bell and maybe throw a few cots in the lobby and sure, there will be a few that are a little upset, but maybe we do a Facebook live concert, you know, just assure them that we’ll get ‘em there, just not right now because we, ‘oversold,’ it.
And you know what? Turns out people do in fact drive in that stuff. Also, I borrowed someone’s jacket so I’m OK, in case you were worried. The night was unbelievable, like, one of my favorite nights ever getting to be with my people and singing to God together. And that’s why I am writing to you. I would so love for you to join us. Get there. Look at the dates and get there. You will not be the same after it. We aren’t. And that was just night one.
If you want to join The Crowd and officially be one of those beautiful souls on our team helping get the word out that we’re coming to your locale we would love to get you hooked up with materials that are super neat to spread about your town. Just follow the directions below to join the Crowd.
